Trouble Shooting

One of the thing I do not like having happen is when I go on a service call is charging
someone for something that they could have fixed themselves very easily.

The very first thing a homeowner should do if their Air Conditioning System does not seem to
working properly is Check To See What is Coming On or not Coming On at the thermostat.

Checking Operations:

  1. Turn the thermostat to off position and the fan switch to the auto position.
  2. Turn the fan switch to the on; if you hear the fan come on (sometimes you need to wait
15-30 seconds after flipping the switch before it comes on.) the fan is probably OK, unless it stops after a minute or five.
  3. If the fan does not come on turn it back to the auto position and turn the system to the cool position and set the temperature
down 10 degrees and go out side and see if the out door unit is coming on. If the outdoor unit is running and the indoor
unit is not running Shut Off the A/C System at the breaker panel (Two Breakers, One for the Indoor Unit, One for the Outdoor Unit
and call us or your local A/C service company.
  4. If there is ICE on the copper lines outside, Shut Off the system (at the breaker panel)check your filters, and call us or your local A/C service company.
  5. If nothing is coming on at all Check Your Breaker Panel for tripped breakers. If one is tripped, you have to shut
the breaker all the way off to reset set it, then try to turn it back on. If it trips right away call us, or your
    local A/C service company.
  6. If everything turns on after turning the breakers on, check and make sure everything is running, if it is, keep a eye on it for
a while (an hour or so) make sure the house temperature is going down.
  7. If everything is running and the temperature is going down, you should be fine. If it has been more than a year since a
service technician has been out to check the system over you may want to call and have one come out.

Billing people for tripped breakers is not fun for us or the customer, and we try to avoid it by asking about it before we
dispatch a technician to the residence.

Water Coming Out Of The Inside Machine

If you notice water on the floor or a stain on the ceiling around your air handler chances are your drain line is clogged up.
Shut Off Your A/C
Before you get out your wet/dry vacumme and clear the drain, just go to the outdoor machine and check for ice on the copper lines.
If there is ice check your filter if they are clean call us or your local A/C service company.
If there is no ice, hook your wet/dry vacumme up to the drain line outside and clear everything out of the drain line; turn the A/C
system on and wait 30 minutes or less, to see if the water drains out of the drain line. If it has been over 30 minutes
and no water has come out of the drain line, call us or your local A/C service company.

Checking your Float Switch

If your A/C system is not running at all, it may be your float switch keeping the system off.

If you have a float switch installed in your A/C system, when the drain line cloggs up the float switch is designed to shut off the A/C
and prevent damage from the water overflowing into the house.

If you can see your Air Handling Unit and there is no float switch installed, call us or your local A/C company to install a float switch.
It may save your house from severe damage, by shutting everything down before the water overflows.
